Meet Mayor Derrick Burgess
The Mayor and Village Board members are elected "at large" to represent the entire City. They are not elected to represent districts or wards.
Village Committee meetings are usually held the first and third Tuesdays of the month. Village Board Meetings are held the second and fourth Tuesdays. . Check the Village Meetings Calendar or the Meeting Agendas pages for the official schedule.

Mayor Derrick Burgess
Mayor Derrick Burgess
served as a Trustee on
the Village Board for
12 years before
winning his first
election term as Mayor
in 2017. Burgess began
his 1st term in office
as Executive Officer
for the Village of
Sauk Village on May 9,
2017. Mayor Burgess
has been a resident
for 40 years in Sauk
Village. With a focus
on equity, economic
development,
affordable housing,
climate change,
advancing community
cohesion and promoting
civic awareness,
sustainability, and
democracy.
Mayor Burgess
understands the
importance of
including residents,
homeowners, business
owners, educational
leaders, church
leaders, village
employees and village
board trustees in the
process. For that
reason, Mayor Burgess
has established
several committees
geared towards
residence engagement
and economic
development.
As Trustee, Burgess
served as Chairman of
Parks & Recreation
Board and
Intergovernmental
Relations Committee
and is an active
member of the Police
Commission. Burgess
has been an active
member of the Village
for many years with
many different
projects to
restructure and
rebuild Sauk Village.
Before taking
the office of Mayor,
he implemented a
yearly celebration for
the Veterans of Sauk
Village and the
surrounding
communities. The
Veterans Day
Celebration is well
attended and has
brought a feeling of
comradery between the
fellow Veterans. In
attendance throughout
the years, several
State Congress
members, State Senate
members and State
Representatives have
attended and spoken at
the events.
Mayor Burgess has
served as Treasurer
and Vice President at
the St. James Catholic
School in Sauk Village
for many years. He is
currently a member of
Grace United Church of
Christ in Sauk Village
and is actively
serving on several
auxiliaries in the
congregation. He was
instrumental in
helping the weekly
food pantry become
successful at Grace
United. The pantry
helps serve residents
from Sauk Village and
surrounding
communities.
Mayor Burgess is
recognized and known
for his positive
working relationship
with all residents of
Sauk Village. He is
known for getting
things done
successfully. During
Mayor Burgess' tenure,
he has set a bold
agenda that promotes
equity and
opportunity, such as
the $10 million dollar
expansion of WinPak
and the opening of the
Gas N Wash truck stop
at 394 and Sauk Trail.
The Mayor retired
from University of
Illinois Chicago in
2014 after 28 years of
service. At University
of Illinois Chicago,
Burgess worked his way
up thru the ranks of
promotions and at
retirement wore the
title of Operating
Engineer. Mayor
Burgess is a certified
Engineer and CFC
License which he
obtained while at the
University of Illinois
Chicago.
Mayor
Burgess and his wife,
Juanita, have raised
their four children in
Sauk Village since
1982. They are proud
grandparents of
fourteen grandchildren
and four
great-grandchildren.
Mayor Burgess
has a fondness for
seniors and children
and will continue to
work on bringing in
more revenue to the
Village of Sauk
Village, to ensure
that all our seniors
and family programs
are fully funded
